Description:

Beginning in 2017, the Village of Wainwright has partnered with the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies and Wainwright Search & Rescue under the National Indian Health Board's Climate Ready Tribes initiative. NIHB funding has helped support an examination of how well geolocator devices like the inReach can be employed as an adaptive strategy that addresses the emergent link between unseasonable weather patterns associated with a changing climate and the unintentional injury of subsistence hunters and travelers. This presentation explores some of the results of this project in order to help foster further conversations as to how such culturally important subsistence pursuits can be safely maintained in the context of the rapidly shifting environmental conditions now occurring in rural, and especially Arctic, Alaska.
