Back-to-back blizzards hit region with high winds and snow

Back-to-back blizzards hit the region of Nome, Alaska, with high winds and heavy snowfall. The storms caused schools and businesses to close, flights to be canceled, and unsafe conditions throughout the area. These extreme weather events are not surprising in a La Niña winter, according to an Alaska climate specialist. The storms also raised concerns about the impact on sea ice and the cold pool at the bottom of the Bering Sea. However, there is more ice this winter compared to previous record low years. The lack of reliable observational data from weather stations in remote locations poses challenges for monitoring and forecasting weather conditions accurately. Weather models are not a substitute for on-the-ground observations.
