Storms hit region with high winds, snow and then rain

A storm hit the Bering Strait region of Alaska with high winds, snow, and rain, causing dangerous road conditions and damage to homes and infrastructure. The storm brought twice the normal amount of precipitation for December, and with more snow in the forecast, it is likely to be the wettest December in Nome since 1931. The storm was caused by a "Pineapple Express," an atmospheric river event where moisture builds up around Hawai'i and the flow pattern comes from the south. The National Weather Service in Alaska predicts more storms with snow and freezing rain in the coming days, and there is potential for an unprecedented sea ice retreat in the Bering Sea.
