Kotzebue, Alaska is experiencing extended storms in early March, with no planes flying for the past three days. This is unusual as it has been some years since the area has had a long storm.
Observation by Jimmy Evak:
It has been some years since we have had a long storm. March 6 marks the 3rd day and there have been no jets or small planes flying.
Comment by Rick Thoman:
A series of storms brought heavy precipitation to western and Northwest Alaska. Some of the moisture came from the subtropical Pacific west of Hawai'i. Kotzebue set new records for highest 24-hour precipitation in March (0.73 inches March 4-5th is) and the highest 3-day precipitation 1.27 inches March 4-6. This appears to be the largest series of early spring storms (in terms of how much precipitation) since March 2009. I've got a Substack post up on this event in western Alaska here.
