Storm related flooding and infrastructure damage

The town of Golovin, Alaska experienced storm-related flooding and infrastructure damage, including damage to a new store structure and hangar. The storm caused a power outage that affected several residential homes and businesses, and internet service was lost. However, there were no medical emergencies and everyone stayed safe. The town is waiting for funding for the final demolition of an old fish plant and has plans for a community garden to address food security concerns due to low fish returns. Anahma Shannon with Kawerak expressed sympathy for the damage and noted that efforts are still underway to demolish the old fish plant.

Observation by Carol Oliver:

See pictures: damage to new store structure and hanger. We lost internet and a power outage effected several residential homes and businesses. Of course there was no way to travel. Thankfully no medical emergencies. Everyone stayed safe!! Good ole time coffee: our church pastors had no heat, but were taken to wait out rest & eat @ Olson’s: I think it would be a good idea if the City/Tribe could plan a drill under our Small Community ‘s Emergency Response Plan ( SCERP) just a thought. Waiting for funding for final demo/ take down of old fish plant/ reuse plans. Also need to apply for DBAC on old dumpsite: water tank/ washeteria and hopefully city building. We also have plans for a community garden (food security) we have felt the impact of low fish returns, not a good season for commercial fisheries, subsistence, nor crabbing.

Anahma Shannon with Kawerak writes:

Thanks for sharing! Tuesday we flew into Golovin on our way to Elim so I could see that the fish plant was still standing. It makes me happy that you were able to get all the contaminates out of there! Still working on getting the building demolished… Too bad about the new hangar and new store. Really sorry to hear that.
