Fall storm wreaks havoc

A major storm hit the Norton Sound region in Alaska from November 4 to 6, causing widespread closures and flooding. Teller, a village in the region, prepared to evacuate as the water rose up over the sandspit, but no one was hurt and no homes were damaged. However, the crowding caused by the evacuation raised concerns about a potential COVID-19 outbreak. Other areas in the region, such as Golovin, Elim, and Shishmaref, also experienced flooding and damage. The storm delayed ice formation for weeks and made the air wetter, leading to increased precipitation on the coast. The storm was likely just the worst of a series of warmer weather systems to come through the region that will continue for the next week.
