One Health Perspectives From a Youth Dog Mushing Program in Rural Alaska Reflected Through Photovoice And Digital Storytelling

Jacques Philip, Research Scientist at the Center for Alaska Native Health 

The Frank Attla Youth & Sled Dog Care-Mushing Program (FAYSDP) is a grassroots initiative where grade 6-12 youth participate in class and field activities focused on local culture and traditions, directed by local mushers and Elders.

The research project Stories and Images of Community Strength from a Youth Dog Mushing Program in Rural Alaska used community-based-participatory-research and qualitative methods in Huslia (photovoice and digital storytelling) to explore the impact of the FAYSDP on youth and community wellness. The research examined strengths based on Athabascan cultural values and western concepts of social capital from the youth perspective.

The presentation includes one of the digital stories created by 15 middle or high-school students, as well as quotes and images from the study, and based on thematic analyses, part of the discussion is on the relationship between the three facets of One Health (humans, animals and the environment) and how they interact to promote wellness and a bright future.
