Juneau officials recommend residential evacuations, warning of dangerous ‘historic avalanches’

Juneau city officials in Alaska are warning residents of potential "historic avalanches" in the downtown area through Monday, with the possibility of an "extreme" danger level being raised. Emergency Manager Tom Mattice recommends that residents avoid avalanche paths, including the Behrends Avenue avalanche path, and is advising caution for those living near it. If conditions worsen, the city may recommend evacuation of downtown neighborhoods. The city and the Red Cross are opening Centennial Hall as an emergency shelter for anyone who chooses to leave their home. COVID-19 mitigation measures will be in place.
