A high pressure system in western Canada is causing temperatures in Southeast Alaska to drop, possibly hitting below zero at the Juneau International Airport for the first time in years. The system is pushing off all low pressure and storm systems, causing temperatures to bottom out early Tuesday and Wednesday morning. The Juneau airport hasn't gone below zero since 2009, and wind chills are expected to reach negative 15 and negative 20 in the morning hours, which can cause frostbite in around 30 minutes. The warming shelter is open at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center for those who don't have elsewhere to go. The cold temperatures also increase the risk of pipes freezing, especially in older, poorly insulated structures.
