In Juneau snow and rain, temperature swings are formula for higher avalanche risk

In Juneau, Alaska, ski guide Ed Shanley and City and Borough of Juneau avalanche forecaster Tom Mattice have warned of higher avalanche risk due to snow and rain, as well as temperature swings. Shanley has been digging snow pits to test the snowpack and has found a weak layer of snow that could start an avalanche. Mattice has warned of avalanches in the backcountry and near trails, and has advised people to look out for warning signs such as big cracks in the snow and a hollow drum sound on hard snow.
