Chugach forecasters warn of dangerous avalanche conditions after 1 death, 2 close calls

Chugach avalanche forecasters in Alaska are issuing warnings of high danger levels after a series of avalanches resulted in one fatality and two non-fatal incidents. A European heli-skier died after being pushed into rocks by an avalanche in a remote area northeast of Anchorage. In separate events, a snowboarder captured his own 800-foot descent in an avalanche on video but escaped unharmed, and another skier was carried a short distance by a wind-slab avalanche but managed to escape. The Chugach National Forecast Avalanche Information Center anticipates "high" danger in Turnagain Pass due to additional snowfall and warns that human-triggered avalanches are very likely. Forecasters note that even small avalanches can be deadly in steep terrain and that the current snowpack contains weak layers, exacerbated by high winds, making avalanches possible even in uncommon areas and at all elevations. They advise backcountry travelers to check snow conditions, leave trip plans with someone, and carry avalanche safety equipment.
