Two people have survived late-season avalanches in Southcentral Alaska. The Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center issued warnings of moderate danger of slab avalanches at all elevations. In one incident, a skier triggered a 200-foot-wide slab avalanche but managed to deploy an avalanche airbag and avoid being buried. In another incident, a skier-triggered avalanche buried a man but he was promptly dug out with minor injuries. The unusual weather and heavy snowfall this year have increased the risk of avalanches in the area. Despite the increased danger, there have been no reported deaths from avalanches this season.
