Anchorage sets new record for amount of snow on the ground in April

Anchorage, Alaska set a new record for the amount of snow on the ground in April after 8 inches of snow fell in the area over the weekend. National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Brettschneider explains that while April snow is not a certainty every year, it is not uncommon. He also notes that the combination of cold temperatures and a lot of snow is rare and has led to a record amount of snowpack this late in the season. Brettschneider also explains that the snowfall has pushed Anchorage to over 100 inches of total snowfall this winter, putting it in the top 10 snowiest winters in the past 100 years. He predicts that the snow will likely remain on the ground until at least April 24-25, and possibly even later if temperatures remain cold and there is more snowfall.
