Anchorage digs out of more than a foot of wet, heavy snow

Anchorage, Alaska received over a foot of wet, heavy snow, causing 143 vehicles to slide or get stuck on snowy roads. State road crews were working to clear major roads before the evening commute, but drivers reported deep snow still swamping neighborhood streets. The storm also dropped inches of snow in the Mat-Su area and southeast Kenai Peninsula, leading to school closures and canceled after-school activities. The snow tapered off by late Wednesday afternoon, but temperatures were expected to fall to lows in the mid-teens Wednesday evening, with single digits expected by Thursday. Wind gusts may cause reduced visibility and drifting snow in some areas.
