Strong winds may have been a factor in avalanche that killed skier in Kenai Mountains, report says

An avalanche that killed a skier in the Kenai Mountains in Alaska may have been caused by strong winds, according to a report by the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center. Jeffrey Cheng, 33, was skiing with two friends when he was carried down a slope and buried in about six feet of snow. The group had chosen to travel in low-angle terrain due to stormy weather and known avalanche danger. The avalanche occurred on a slope with an angle of about 35 degrees, and the ridgetop weather station closest to the site recorded sustained winds exceeding 40 mph and gusts reaching the 80s.
