Roofs, sheds collapse after heavy snow then rain

Heavy snow followed by rain in Haines, Alaska, caused damage to homes and structures, including collapsed roofs and sheds. The severe weather prompted the governor to declare a disaster emergency in Haines, Skagway, Yakutat, and Juneau, making state public assistance funds available for repairs on municipal infrastructure but not private homes. Last December was the coldest on record in Haines, with an average temperature of 16.1 degrees Fahrenheit. In other weather-related news, a massive underwater volcano eruption near the Pacific island nation of Tonga caused sonic booms that were heard and felt in Haines and across the state. The National Weather Service issued another winter storm warning for heavy snow expected on Wednesday.
