The text describes the impacts of heavy rain in Fairbanks, Alaska in December 2021. The author reports receiving 10 inches of heavy wet snow that turned into rain, resulting in over an inch of rain before the precipitation ended. The rain percolated through the deep snowpack, causing water to flow at ground level and leaving frozen puddles in low parts of the driveway. The author also notes a lack of red-backed voles since the rain, which is in contrast to their previous sightings.
Here in South Fox we received about 10" of heavy wet snow Dec 25-26 that changed to rain, with over an inch of rain before the precipitation ended. As we were clearing snow after the end of the storm, it became apparent that the rain had percolated through the deep snowpack and water had been flowing at ground level, as evidenced by frozen puddles in the same low parts of the driveway that get puddles in the summer. Possibly related, we have not seen any sign of red-backed voles since the rain, in marked contrast to quite a bit prior to the rain.
