The Hatcher Pass Road in Alaska has been closed since April 3 due to one of the largest spring avalanche cycles in decades. The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOTPF) has stated that the road will likely remain closed until at least April 11. The avalanches are considered class 4, which is unusual and large, and have impacted the lower road, which has not happened before. The Hatcher Pass Avalanche Center has warned of increased avalanche danger, with the most recent forecast on April 5 being the highest rating for avalanche danger yet this winter. DOTPF has not been able to deploy heavy machinery to excavate the snow on the roadways due to extreme avalanche danger, and the two avalanche specialists on staff will continue to monitor the mountains daily. The road is most likely going to be closed for another five days, and another storm is expected to move in, depositing material in the mountains and making the situation more unstable.
