Extreme weather has already displaced 7 million people this year

Extreme weather events have already displaced over seven million people in the first half of 2019, according to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Center (IDMC). The figure is the highest mid-year mark on record and does not include the displacement caused by Hurricane Dorian. The IDMC predicts that up to 22 million people could be displaced by the end of the year. The majority of these displacements are caused by weather-related disasters, which is concerning as indicators suggest that extreme weather events will become more frequent. Rising global temperatures have led to an increase in extreme weather events, including storms, fires, and droughts. While it is difficult to attribute any single event to climate change, as many as 68% of extreme weather events have been made more severe by human-caused climate change.
