The UN children's fund, UNICEF, has estimated that 1.4 million children in Somalia will suffer from acute malnutrition this year, a 50% increase on previous projections. The agency has already treated over 56,000 severely malnourished children in the country in 2017, an increase of almost 90% on the previous year. Somalia is currently facing the threat of its third famine in 25 years, with drought, disease and displacement all affecting children in the country. Over 615,000 people have been forced to flee their homes since November 2016, with 1.1 million already internally displaced. The UN has warned that 20 million people, including nearly 3 million in Somalia, are facing famine, with the remainder in Nigeria, South Sudan and Yemen.
