Observation: Found a beetle on my front porch of my house. I have never seen this type of beetle before in Alaska.
Cooperative Extension Service Consult: Jessie Moan, State IPM Technician writes, "This is a predaceous diving beetle. They are not uncommon in Alaska, but they are not commonly encountered because they are aquatic insects. They are attracted to lights and can occasionally be found outside of water near light sources or will sometimes leave the water to look for a new water source.
