Warm weather has made for unsafe traveling conditions, including a snowmachine race.
Observation: In February around the 23rd we had a couple days of 40 degree weather that melted the 8 inches of snow we had just got. There was water everywhere, on the tundra, on the river. The ocean ice went out and some individuals lost crab pots. There were rotten spots on the river, making trails unsafe. Crab is a subsistence activity and with our warm weather it has become dangerous. Two crabbers almost got stuck on the ice when they were pulling their pots because leads opened up when they were out.The iron doggers were coming through Unalakleet and ended up driving across gravel, overflow, and bare tundra.I couldn't get out to check my traps because the river was unsafe and had open holes with 8 inches of water flowing on top of the ice. The iron doggers normally come down the river and had to be rerouted over land.
