“We spent the weekend outdoors camping on the peninsula and notices shoreline grasses has dried and shriveled.”
Observation by Mara Kerr:
The week of May 14, 2023 daytime temperatures reached 30 degrees Celsius for four days in a row, after the driest spring recorded (rainfall had not yet reached 200 mm by May 14). We spent the weekend outdoors camping on the peninsula and notices shoreline grasses has dried and shriveled. We later learned that this same week, forage crops on the island died from sun exposure and temperatures during what is usually a period of rapid growth.
I've connected with three local and scientific experts as consults for this observation:
Amber Rowse, livestock farmer and regenerative agriculture consultant Emma Holmes, organics specialist at BC Ministry of Agriculture Colin Park, section head for water allocation in BC's Comptroller Office
