Golovin, Alaska, United States |
Warm water near Golovin is hurting pink salmon. Many salmon caught had red speckled dots on flesh, raising concerns about food safety. Female pink salmon were seen dead in the bay.
Dear LEO Members,
We have received observations from Golovin, Shaktoolik, Kotlik and Alakanuk about dead chum, pink, and king salmon, as well as whitefish and fry, dead in local rivers. Observations have also been forwarded to the fisheries biologists at the Norton Sound Economic Development Corporation. In coordination with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, they have detected warmer than usual water temperatures which they believe to be a main contributing factor in the fish mortalities. They are working to collect water temperature and dissolved oxygen measurements. The full news bulletin from NSEDC can be found here.
If you are also observing salmon mortalities in your area, we encourage you to post your observation to LEO.
