In December of 2020 an atmospheric river brought heavy rains on top of a deep snowpack.

An atmospheric river brought heavy rains on top of a deep snowpack, causing landslides and massive destruction around northern Southeast Alaska. Haines was hit the hardest with multiple roads blocked by slides or flooding and a deadly landslide in town that took the lives of two people. Many homes were evacuated. There was widespread damage throughout the community, including washed-out roads, disrupted utilities, and damage and destruction to multiple homes and properties.
