Sea bird mortality observed on southeast end of Homer Spit
Observation: Walked the tip of Homer Spit this evening. There were a couple dozen carcasses just in my path. Mostly murres I think but I also saw a gull.
University of Washington Consult: Dr. Julia Parrish, writes, "Homer beaching: Homer is one of the communities (also including Seward and Whittier) that is seeing high numbers of seabirds – most all of them murres – washing ashore. These birds are clearly food-stressed. Many folks have reported seeing murres close inshore dive-bombing herring or other small fish, which is truly unusual as these birds winter offshore on the coastal shelf." J. COASST
