Alaska's Ocean Sentinals: Seabirds as Ecosystem Indicators

Description:

Seabirds are indicators of the marine ecosystem and since 2015, seabird die-offs have occurred annually in Alaska due to starvation. Tracking these events in Alaska, with its vast coastline is a daunting effort and federal, state, tribal partners, and local communities are crucial to this effort. The Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team works in partnership with organizations and communities to monitor marine bird mortality throughout Alaska and in Washington, Oregon and California. The state of Alaska has witnessed several mass die-offs of seabirds in the past several years, and in this presentation we will share results of monitoring efforts and put these into the context of long-term trends and other ecological conditions.
