It'll likely take 2 weeks to clear snow from Eagle River road after massive avalanche, officials say

Anchorage and state officials estimate that it will take two weeks to clear snow and debris from a major Eagle River road after a massive avalanche last week. The avalanche, which was described as a once in 100-year event, blocked Hiland Road and severed access to main roadways for residents of over 100 homes. While no residents were reported injured or missing, they were ordered to evacuate so emergency officials could mitigate the chance of another avalanche. Mitigation efforts, which included the placement of explosives by helicopter, were successful, and residents were allowed to return to their homes after about 8 hours. Workers will begin removing snow on Monday, and emergency teams will continually monitor conditions to ensure it's safe to truck out the snow. Both the mayor and governor have issued disaster declarations in response to the avalanche.
