Man who found hiker trapped in Flattop Mountain avalanche said rescue was ‘a miracle’

A hiker was rescued from an avalanche on Flattop Mountain in Anchorage, Alaska, after another hiker spotted his moving feet in a pile of debris. The rescuer, Alex Kuprienko, dug the man out with his hands in about five minutes. The hiker had been trapped head-first in the snow for over an hour but was able to breathe due to air pockets and spaces within the debris. The man was checked by medics and refused an ambulance, and Kuprienko drove him home. The avalanche was caused by heavy winds, and avalanche safety courses and precautions are recommended for hikers.
