Wind gusts in Northwest Alaska pushed away sea ice, caused power outages

High winds in Northwest Alaska caused power outages and pushed away sea ice, but the storm is expected to weaken and drift north. The peak winds in Kivalina were at least 75 miles an hour, and blown fuses at the Kivalina power plant caused two more outages. The storm could have caused more damage to the coast if it had occurred a month ago when there was much less ice. The area is forecasted to see several days of calmer weather and then more storms from the Bering Sea.
