Two icebreakers are on the way to rescue ice-locked ships on Northern Sea Route

Two icebreakers are on their way to rescue ships that are ice-locked on the Northern Sea Route, while six other vessels in the port of Pevek are also likely to need assistance. The ice conditions in the Arctic have been getting thicker and harder to navigate, with an ice layer up to 30 centimeters thick across most of the Laptev Sea and East Siberian Sea. Russia's fleet of nuclear icebreakers is being contacted for assistance, but the two most modern icebreakers are currently moored in Murmansk and St. Petersburg. The region of Chukotka heavily depends on supplies delivered by ships, with 5,000 tons of foodstuff still needing to be sent.
