Climate Change in the Lower Yukon

19 April 2018
Reflection

Emmonak, Alaska, United States

Climate change has effected Emmonak Alaska significantly. Through my young eyes I watched the temperature rise and my fish camp get closer to the edge of bank. Erosion is washing away fish camps and homes forcing houses to move further and further away from the shore. With the temperature rising the Yukon River freezes later so the potlucks are pushed back a month. The community gatherings are rushed due to the late freezing of the river and early thawing. The Yukon River is a source of transportation and with changes in the temperature traveling on the river become unsafe.
