Tana River: Nearly all salmon die before they reach the sea

Tana, Finnmark, Norway

A new tracking study in the Tana River system found that only 7 out of 196 Atlantic salmon smolts (about 4%) survived their first migration toward the sea. Predation (pike, mink and birds) is highlighted as the main cause, with warming river conditions potentially worsening the situation.
