Residents in Salekhard reported the Ob River ice beginning to move on May 12, 2026—earlier than the long-term average breakup date of May 22. Hydrologists attribute the early ice drift mainly to earlier breakup upstream in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug and warmer water flowing north from the south.
