A damaged oil pipeline in Nuussuaq near Upernavik spilled around 8,000 liters of diesel into the sea, forcing halibut processing and fish production to pause for two days and severely disrupting local fisheries.

A diesel spill in Pond Inlet, Nunavut, resulted in 7,000 litres leaking from a damaged pipeline, with some contaminated soil left in place to maintain structural integrity.

Environmental experts are worried the cumulative effects of gas, oil and fuel spills aren't being adequately tracked in parts of the North. Last year, Nunavut and N.W.T. together recorded hundreds of contaminant spills, some of them small and others in the thousands of litres.

Light diesel leaked from an oil company facility into Ramfjorden outside Tromsø, and police, fire crews, Kystverket and the acute pollution committee are working to contain it.
