The annual Finnish Military Ski Championships in Rovaniemi were cancelled because unusually warm late-winter weather melted the snow needed for the events.

An unusually warm, low-snow winter in West Greenland is already affecting the Arctic Circle Race in Sisimiut, with fewer local sign-ups and potential changes to the start area and route. Organizers also expect tougher logistics because limited snow makes transporting equipment more difficult and sea ice along part of the course is not yet fully frozen.

A lack of snowfall and unfavorable winds have forced Björkliden’s ski area in northern Sweden to open with reduced terrain, limiting skiing to two smaller slopes near the hotel while staff wait for more snow.

Unusually mild, rainy weather in Nuuk melted much of the city’s snow into slush, leaving large puddles and standing water because ditches and culverts were clogged with snow and ice. The municipality and transport companies worked to flush drains and pump away water from low-lying areas and parking lots.

Nuuk has had such a mild November that early snow melted, with an average temperature of +1.9°C so far versus the normal -3.3°C, according to DMI. Colder weather with snow and frost is expected next week.

Unseasonably warm weather in Iceland is causing melting snow and thawing ice, leading to wet and slippery conditions, with yellow weather warnings issued for parts of the country.
