Numerous earthquakes were recorded just west of the volcano Þorbjörn, near the village of Grindavík in South Iceland on Thursday, RÚV reports. An earthquake measuring 3.3 was recorded just before 5pm on Thursday and was followed by another measuring 3.2. An earthquake swarm that started on Saturday night just off the coast in the Öxarfjörður area of northeast Iceland is still going strong. Some 500 quakes have now been registered, including 60 over magnitude 2.0. The epicentre of most of them is around 30 kilometres west-north-west of Kópasker.

When geophysicist Sigurjón Jónsson started researching South Iceland earthquakes a short while after the big one in 2000, he was struck by how many of the other big shakes had also occurred during summertime. He decided to search through old records and found 30 earthquakes in South Iceland that had caused damage were recorded—either by date or at least by time of year. He noticed a pattern and wanted to learn more.
