Ireland’s major contribution to the study of whales comes from an accidental stranding off the coast of Wexford.
The seven northern bottlenose dolphins were spotted stranded on a beach in Rossnowlagh, County Donegal, on the north west coast of Ireland, earlier today.
Scientists are baffled by a wave of whale deaths - which saw more carcasses wash up on the coasts of Scotland and Ireland in the past month than in the previous decade.
The IWDG says a minimum of 16 beaked whale deaths were recorded along the North West coast of Ireland from Galway to Donegal between 3 and 22 August, 2018.
"Dolphin strandings have more than tripled in recent years with more than 70 animals washed up dead or dying on Irish beaches since the start of the year."
