Hundreds of northern lampfish were observed on Nahku Bay beach. The last die-off occurred in March 2011.
A resident of the community was near the gravel pit when he came across a number of dead fish.
The smelt, caught through the ice in late January, may have caused a person who ate some to get sick. Local, tribal and state officials worked together to collect and analyze the fish.
