Chinook salmon are arriving at the Whitehorse fish ladder in one of the strongest Yukon River runs seen in recent years, with 19 fish counted as of Aug. 5. The run is still below historic averages and rebuilding targets, but it is the highest to date since 2019.

Low salmon returns have led Norwegian authorities to shorten the 2026 salmon fishing season by several weeks in rivers in Trøndelag and Nordmøre. Fishing restrictions are also being tightened in parts of the Trondheim Fjord and Åfjorden.

A new tracking study in the Tana River system found that only 7 out of 196 Atlantic salmon smolts (about 4%) survived their first migration toward the sea. Predation (pike, mink and birds) is highlighted as the main cause, with warming river conditions potentially worsening the situation.

A new report on Atlantic salmon in the Tana (Deatnu) River system shows extremely low smolt survival on the migration to sea—only 8 of 196 tagged smolts were recorded reaching the ocean. Predation from birds, fish, and other predators is highlighted as a likely major cause of the early mortality.
