Jolene Auliye reports on the storm surge in Shaktoolik, Alaska, which caused erosion towards the old village and high water levels that led to some community members being evacuated to the school. The woodpile on the ocean side also posed a threat to nearby houses. The post has been forwarded to emergency preparedness teams and the US Army Corps of Engineers to address the erosion concerns. Shaktoolik is located between the Shaktoolik River and Bering Sea, surrounded by both fresh and salt water.
Observation by Jolene Auliye:
Shaktoolik was one of the villages that was on flood watch. The woodpile on the ocean side nearly hit the houses. There was more erosion towards the old village with the water level very high that some community members were evacuated to the school. Shaktoolik lies between the Shaktoolik River and Bering Sea, surrounding our village on both sides with fresh and salt water.
