Anchorage breaks snow record for New Year’s Day following the warmest Dec. 31 on record

Anchorage, Alaska broke records for both snowfall and warmth on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. The city received 9.5 inches of snow, breaking the previous record set in 1963-64, and also broke the daily record for warmest December 31 with temperatures reaching 46 degrees Fahrenheit. The snow caused blizzard conditions and road closures, but has since tapered off. Temperatures are expected to drop to the single digits and possibly below zero in the coming days. Regional snow totals from the storm include 21 inches in Girdwood and 11.8 inches in Upper Potter Marsh.
