The Last Skiers

A new report by the Scenarios Network for Alaska and Arctic Planning at the University of Alaska Fairbanks has predicted that the snow line on the Chugach Mountains in Alaska will shift well inland from Valdez in the next 10 to 20 years, with many areas receiving less than 30% of their winter precipitation as snow by 2030. By 2060, the snowline will have retreated to the highest peaks. The report uses climate modelling data to show how the changes will affect snow. The loss of spring snow coverage in the Arctic has come much faster than models predicted, with snow disappearing even faster than sea ice. Alaska is likely to suffer the worst snow losses across the north, 30 to 40%, by 2050. The report concludes that bad winters will come more frequently, and that snow-making equipment is a way to adapt to climate change.
