Early Waterfowl

The first ducks and geese of the season have arrived at the ANTHC campus in Anchorage, Alaska, which seems early. The observer wonders if the waterfowl are following other cues of an early spring and migrating early. The lake levels are low due to the low snow this winter, and it is expected that Anchorage will start the summer with low lake levels. The Alaska Audubon Society has been notified of this observation.

Observation: Today the first ducks, two males and one female mallard arrived at the ANTHC campus in Anchorage, along with a pair of Canada Geese. These seems a bit early and I wonder if waterfowl are following other cues of an early spring and migrating early. Fortunately they have a little open water around the lake fringe which they seemed to be enjoying. The lake however, is the lowest I have seen it, on account of the low snow this winter. Even after the ice melts, I think we will be starting the summer in Anchorage with low lake levels.
