Severe erosion at the Nome River mouth in Alaska has caused significant damage to campsites at Fort Davis, threatening the livelihoods of subsistence fishers and hunters. The cause of the erosion is unclear, but may be linked to climate change, sand sales, and the Port of Nome impeding beach nourishment. Efforts to mitigate the erosion have not yet begun, and the site is outside the municipality's responsibility to act. A hazard mitigation plan for Fort Davis does not currently exist, but grants are available to formulate one.
