The North Slope coastline in Alaska has been severely damaged by an autumn storm, with the cost of repairs expected to exceed $10m. The storm, which began on 28 September, caused sustained winds of over 30 mph and gusts of over 45 mph, leading to flooding and erosion. Roads were destroyed, while the town’s freshwater source was threatened. The storm also caused the failure of over three miles of protective berms, leading to flooding of 22 lots. The borough has purchased 15,000 cubic yards of gravel for repairs, which are 80% complete. Discussions are ongoing regarding the construction of a seawall.
