Mat-Su declares disaster after Willow Creek flooding forces evacuations, closes bridge

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough in Alaska has declared a local disaster after flooding caused by an ice jam at Willow Creek forced the evacuation of seven families and closed the Deneki Bridge. The declaration requests state assistance and an emergency declaration from the governor's office. The flooding has caused water damage to three homes and others are at risk. No deaths or injuries have been reported. Mechanical solutions to the flooding are being investigated, but the bridge will be impassable for the next few days. Assistance is being offered to those attempting to leave the area or re-enter during daylight hours. The American Red Cross shelter at the Willow Community Center remains open.
