Storm causes flooding, erosion across Northwest Alaska

A storm that hit Northwest Alaska caused flooding and erosion in some areas, but others were spared. Kivalina was lucky to avoid damage to infrastructure, while Deering saw significant flooding and erosion, with some houses losing their foundations. The storm surge also impacted local shops and caused damage to the road to the airport. The storm has highlighted the need for safe evacuation routes, as the current shoreline route is becoming increasingly dangerous due to erosion. Repair work for Deering will have to wait until spring, when the ground thaws and supplies can be trucked in. Local governments have been lending assistance where possible, but funding for repairs is still uncertain.
