The cold temperatures are early, but how unusual?

Alaska is experiencing cold temperatures and snow, prompting questions about how unusual this is. Records show that there have been 61 similarly cold weeks since 1952, with many occurring in December, January, and February. However, in the past 10 years, there have only been three other weeks as cold as this during a seven-day period, with two of those occurring in November 2011 and 2019. While the upcoming week may flirt with a few records for the coldest daytime highs, it is not expected to set any record lows. Anchorage residents are advised to dress for the weather and be prepared for single-digit and sub-zero temperatures.
