Seismologist says earthquake may have triggered mudslide on the Haines Highway

A mudslide on the Haines Highway in Alaska may have been triggered by a 3.6 magnitude earthquake, according to the Alaska Earthquake Center. The slide occurred after heavy rains returned to the region following a dry September. The cleanup is expected to cost between $200,000 and $400,000. The Department of Transportation plans to make improvements to the stretch of highway between milepost 19 and 23 to help minimise the effect of future slides.
